Accessibility at Sammy's

Sammy's Family Restaurant is a family-owned diner at 2021 Del Paso Blvd in Sacramento. Our website was built with accessibility in mind, and we treat it as ongoing work rather than a box we ticked once.

The standard we build to

This site is built and tested against the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.1 at Level AA, and we work toward version 2.2 where we can. These are the guidelines most commonly referenced when people talk about whether a website is usable by everyone.

What we have done

Specific things that are in place across the site:

• Color and contrast. Body text, headings, and labels are checked against the contrast levels the standard asks for. Our brighter brand colors are used for decoration and backgrounds, not for small text.
• Keyboard access. Every link and button can be reached and used with the Tab and Enter keys, without a mouse. There is a visible outline showing where you are on the page.
• Skip to content. Every page starts with a link that jumps straight past the navigation.
• Screen readers. Pages use proper headings and page structure, each page has a single main heading, and images carry text descriptions.
• Reduced motion. If your device is set to reduce motion, the gentle fades and hover effects turn themselves off.
• Zoom and phones. Pages are built to stay readable when text is enlarged and to work on small screens.
• Our menu is a real web page, not a photo or a PDF, so it can be read aloud, searched, and enlarged like any other text.
• No add-on accessibility widget. We deliberately do not use an overlay tool that claims to fix accessibility automatically. Those tools often make things worse for people using screen readers. We fix the underlying pages instead.

What we are still working on

We would rather tell you plainly than pretend the work is finished:

• Some small decorative graphics, such as the star icons next to reviews, sit at a lower contrast than we would like. Where that happens, the same information is always written out in text nearby.
• Accessibility is not a one time job. Every time we add a photo, a dish, or a page, something new can slip through. We re-check pages as we change them.

Other companies' websites

Some things on our site come from other companies, including the map and the online ordering service we link to. When you tap an ordering link, you leave our website and continue on theirs. We do not control how those sites are built, and we cannot fix accessibility problems on them. If you run into trouble ordering online, please call us at (916) 925–6747 and we will take your order over the phone.

Accessibility at the diner

The restaurant itself is wheelchair accessible, with a lowered section at the front counter and tables that can be moved to fit your party. If there is something we can do to make your visit easier, tell us when you arrive or call ahead and we will get it sorted before you get here.

If any part of this website is hard to use, we want to hear about it. Tell us what page you were on and what happened, and we will look into it and get back to you. If something is blocking you from what you needed, say so and we will help you get it another way in the meantime.
